Rupa Marya, MD
Hospitalist and Musician
Rupa Marya is a hospitalist and an Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. She is also the lead singer, composer and musical director of Rupa & The April Fishes, a band that seeks to celebrate beauty in pluralism and reinvigorate appreciation for living music with their diverse, global sounds. The daughter of Punjabi immigrants, Rupa was raised between the San Francisco Bay Area, France, and India, learning at an early age that the sound of the streets was where her heart found its home—not only in its inherent musicality, but also in the force of music as a bridge-builder. Rupa & The April Fishes weaves stories of human struggle and resilience with a rich mix of languages and instruments—in the end, not so different from a day on the medicine wards. Rupa received her MD from Georgetown University in 2002 and trained in internal medicine at UCSF.
